The Substance Film
The filmmaker's bold critique addresses the tyranny of women's appearance and the feared consequences of advancing years. Demi Moore offers an inspired portrayal as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old celebrity demoted to starring in an aerobics show on television. Edged out thanks to her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to an enigmatic and gruesome process known as this experimental method. This generates a new version of herself portrayed by Margaret Qualley, culminating in a steadily more toxic connection between them. October 17th, Paramount+

Presence Film
Soderbergh tests his directorial skills in this nifty ghostly tale filmed completely from the perspective of the spirit. The Black Phone Horror
The director's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a continuation. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, multiple kidnappings has left the youth frightened. When Finney is kidnapped by the villain and locked up in a basement, he dreads the worst. Yet the old telephone in the room continues to ring, with eerie communicators providing assistance, while the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister could save him. An effective horror. The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the battle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for greed in this director's delightfully tacky biopic regarding the shamed TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor acts as the venal Jim, who declares initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple commence monetising the people's religious faith. It's a spectacle of poor styling, overdone appearance and insincerity, yet the lead actress succeeds to present the character in a likable light. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, the Film4 channel
