Much like bad weather hit the north-west the prior day, the home side swept Manchester United aside at the their home ground. It was a statement three goal win for the City coach's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that firmly established their championship potential as they strengthened their position at the top of the table.

Consecutive Losses for United

This result represented consecutive Women's Super League losses for Skinner's side for the maiden instance since May 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the table toppers with their title hopes in serious doubt.

United’s capability to juggle domestic and European football with a thin squad has been a widely debated topic since they secured entry to the European competition. Looking at the schedule, it always appeared this was the week that would truly test this ability. Unfortunately for the opposition, they appeared weary from start to finish, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

The United manager had sought to make changes with a handful of changes. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all added freshness, although the exclusion of the high-performing Malard to the bench caused surprise.

Manchester City, in comparison, have no such fitness concerns. Jeglertz made one adjustment from last week’s win over Everton with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since recovering from a physical setback.

Overpowering Start

They added to their lead with two more goals just before the half-time. When Rose was permitted to drive through the center from defense, the pitch opened up for City. The key Kerstin Casparij received possession on the right side before sending a precise driven ball for Shaw to bundle home. Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a swift turnover in the ball saw Hemp allowed the room to strike a shot home from distance.

Final Period

The primary change came from the United manager at the half-time as Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was futile to alter the outcome of the contest. Former City player Jess Park came nearest, striking the woodwork, but the away team were creatively abject and failed to record a single shot on goal.

The home side, in contrast, could have increased their advantage when a delightful Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the winning team. After failing to defeat any side who placed above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have victories against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a strong position after the opening fixtures.
