The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
