RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
