Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
